I'm an American composer for film, television and video games, and a session and live drummer for radio and records.
I'm also very passionate about creating resources for and providing mentoring opportunities to creative artists all over the world. I am founder and editor-in-chief of SCOREcast, the popular online consortium of global film music and post-production professionals. I author the creative resource The Conversation, which is distributed monthly to more than 550 subscribers across all disciplines of the creative arts space.
I speak internationally to creative artists about the convergence of art and business.
I'm interested in working with incredible people who love to initiate extraordinarily creative projects. If that resonates with you, please get in touch and let's do something great together!
Available time is a serious issue, and you don't have a lot of it left. If you think you do, then I would suggest turning your attention to a trade that is more of a slower burn. One that features a marketplace that isn't time-sensitive. Take auto repair, for example. There will always be people who need their cars fixed. Always. Even if the day comes when we all have cars that are 100% computerized, there will still need to be human beings that can fix any wonky computers that need fixing. Eventually, there'll be robots that will handle that too, but for the next 15 to 20 years that industry is still in the safe zone. Consumable art, on the other hand, is in short-life at the moment. We are in a pivotal shift in our society right now in that there is a movement away from consumable art, and...
I'm in the Taipei airport awaiting my next leg of flights on a cross-continental trip back home to the States. I've already been in the air 10 hours today. Yep. It's a glamorous life... let me tell ya! It's All About the Start and the Finish As my last flight was landing, it occurred to me that once you are up in the air you really don't think too much about your flight. The how's and why's of what the two little dudes are doing up in the front cabin are pretty much inconsequential once the plane is off the ground. Sure—if some unexpected turbulence kicks up things can get a little stomach-turning, but other than that it's pretty much out of your mind. As long as nothing starts rockin', you don't bother thinking about it. However, when the plane is taking off or landing... EVERYONE is paying attention. Some...
Just last week, I met a colleague for lunch at a favorite cozy restaurant. It was hot that day, so just before I met her there I stopped at a 7-Eleven and bought a bottle of ice cold Evian water to stay hydrated with. When I got to the restaurant, I met my friend inside. We quickly exchanged pleasantries and began ordering from the menu. The waiter was awesome—helpful, attentive to our questions, and quick to offer opinions and recommendations. As he quickly left to put in our order, we got relaxed and started catching up recent news, work, projects, and life stuff. About ten minutes into our conversation, a gentleman that neither of us had ever seen—obviously the manager—approached our table and interrupted. "Excuse me, sir," he said, looking at me. "Would you mind if I ask you to put your Evian bottle in your bag or under your...
Last week, someone asked me if I have a method to making decisions about my film career, for SCOREcast, or for the other gazillion plates I have spinning at any one time. After wasting about twenty seconds trying to think of some really cool shit to say, I had to tell the truth... which, depending on how you look at it, may or may not be all that sexy.
